thoughts from before 2020

I actually wrote this in March of 2020, before we all knew what was coming for us. It’s bittersweet reading it back now. Part of me wants to pat that girl’s back and say “oh sweet summer child”. Honestly, a lot of what I say here still holds true for 2023. So I guess I’ll keep trying, come hell or pandemic.

They say that saying your goals out loud, or putting them in writing, or telling them to people close to you makes you more likely to actually accomplish them. Actually, it’s a lot more than “they”, there’s actually a lot of research on this. I’ve used it and seen it first hand with clients. It’s real.

Unpopular opinion - I’m not a huge fan of the whole idea of New Year’s resolutions. I don’t think people should feel like they have to wait until the start of a new year to make a change or better themselves. Carpe diem and do it now. But I’m also a firm believer of “to each their own”.

It just so happens that I’m feeling like making some personal changes and working towards growth right now. So I’m rolling with it.

I learned about SMART goals so much through education, and use them so frequently for work, I could recite the guidelines and reasoning in my sleep. So I’m going to be a rebel, and not use any SMART goals for myself right now.

Whether you want to call it a mantra, an intention, a goal, whatever, this is what’s on my mind for all of 2020.

More writing

More painting

More photos

More laughs

More trips

More concerts

More books

2019 was the year of live music. I went to more concerts in a single year than I had in the rest of my life combined. And I loved it. A couple were out of my comfort zone - like going to see Tyler Childers play by myself and I’ve never seen The Bluebird more crowded. I saw bands I had barely heard of (Mt. Joy and Michigander) and walked away with a new favorite. Houndmouth put on a show that will be burned into my memory forever. I still don’t understand how the voice of Colter Wall physically comes out of that body. All this to say, these shows made me really happy and you bet your ass I’ll keep going.

2020 will be the year of continuing
